The Last Microsoft Product Rename of 2024

As we approach the end of 2024, Microsoft is gearing up for a major rebranding that will impact millions of users worldwide. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming changes:

Microsoft Copilot” Becomes “Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat

Starting in January 2025, the commercial, ad-free, web-grounded chat service known as “Microsoft Copilot” will be renamed to “Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat”. This service, which offers enterprise data protection, is currently available for free to over 400 million Office 365 and Microsoft 365 users.

New Features and Billing Model

“Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat” will not only include web chat but also agents that can access content from SharePoint or Graph Connectors. These features will be billed based on metered consumption and will be off by default. Users can leverage their Azure subscription for Copilot Studio to enable these functionalities, providing a new way to use agents without needing the full M365 Copilot license.

Rebranding of the Microsoft 365 App

The Microsoft 365 app, available on both desktop and mobile, will also be renamed to “Microsoft 365 Copilot”. This change aligns with the broader integration of AI and productivity tools under the Copilot branding.

Availability Across Platforms

“Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat” will continue to be available to all users within the “Microsoft 365 Copilot” app, as well as on the web. Additionally, it will soon be pinned in Teams and Outlook, starting in January. This integration will include chat and optional agent functionalities, making it easier for users to access these tools across different platforms.

Full Microsoft 365 Copilot Experience

While all Office and Microsoft 365 users will have access to “Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat,” those who want the full “Microsoft 365 Copilot” experience will still need the appropriate license. This full experience includes accessing work data from SharePoint, Outlook, and OneDrive, and integrating these capabilities into apps like Teams, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
